I will remember the night of May 10-11, 2024 as one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. I saw the Northern Lights directly in my backyard! This timelapse captures the intense geomagnetic storm that literally ignited the night sky with breathtaking Northern Lights. The storm has been ignited by several coronal mass ejections coming from the giant sunspot region AR3664, 16 times larger than Earth. Filmed using a Wyze Cam v3 security camera, this vibrant hues of green, purple and red pillars of light dancing across the sky left me overwhelmed with emotion. My 2023 Astrophotography Highlights
I attempted to capture a timelapse of the Perseids meteor shower at their peak with a Budget Security Camera. The result is stunning! The timelapse was set to record the night sky on the night of of August 12-13, 2023 from 10:30 pm to 4:30 am. I counted more than 40 meteors during the span of a few hours, with 4 of them particularly bright and with a persistent trail. You can sit on the front row, fasten your seat belt and enjoy the show! Perseids Meteor Shower Timelapse Filmed on a Budget Security Camera
In March 2023 I had the opportunity to borrow a Coronado Personal Solar Scope (PST). This scope is specifically designed to safely watch the Sun and comes with an internal etalon filter that transmits hydrogen-alpha light only. With the PST you can see fine solar details including dynamic prominences and sunspots, flares, filaments and surface granulation. I tested the scope capabilities with my OSC camera. How to Add a Comet to Stellarium
My 2022 astrophotography highlights: two lunar eclipses, deep sky imaging, nebulae and galaxies, globular clusters, a comet, a quasar, a supernova, a black hole, the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Mars. As an avid astrophotographer, I captured some unforgettable moments in 2022. From lunar eclipses to supernovas, from galaxies to bright nebulae, from planets to sunspots, it was a year filled with exciting celestial events and beautiful cosmic sights. I was lucky enough to have a clear sky when two lunar eclipses occurred. The first one was a partial lunar eclipse that happened on May 15, and the second one was a total eclipse visible before dawn on November 8 from my location. It was a privilege for me to photograph these beautiful astronomical events. On May 2, I imaged a supernova in a distant galaxy for my very first time (S2022hrs, located in the NGC 4647 galaxy in Virgo). A supernova is an explosive event that occurs when a massive star collapses and explodes. I was thrilled to capture this supernova with my 8 inch telescope and imaging camera from my light polluted location. I imaged the first ever discovered quasar (3C 273), located at the heart of a distant galaxy in Virgo. It is breathtaking to think of this mysterious celestial object which is the extremely bright core of an active galaxy powered by a supermassive black hole, that lies at a staggering 2,443 million light-years distance from Earth. I had dozens of deep sky imaging sessions: I captured galaxies, globular clusters and narrowband images of bright nebulae. I also took some beautiful images of Jupiter and Saturn. But perhaps the most impressive moment of the year came when I imaged Mars with its features, the North polar cap and its clouds, just a few days before its opposition. It was an amazing year for my astrophotography journey, and I can’t wait to see what 2023 will bring. Happy 2023 and always remember to look up at the stars! My 2022 Astrophotography Highlights
In the early morning on November 8, 2022 I imaged the total lunar eclipse with a DSLR camera from my driveway. For my location the eclipse was visible in the early morning with the Moon very low on the horizon, but I decided to give a try and to observe the totality of the eclipse. I observed the totality from my driveway and captures some images with a Nikon D5300 DSLR camera and a 55-200mm telephoto zoom lens. The next total lunar eclipse will take place on March 14, 2025.
